True Story:
Is a “red meat overdose” actually possible? For a long time conventional wisdom said “eating too much red meat is not healthy” but according to some forward thinking doctors who are personally putting the theory to the test, the “red meat overdose” may be a fairy tale…
Though the number of carnivores grows everyday, the first two “carnivore” proponents to hit my radar were Dr. Shawn Baker and Dr. Paul Saladino. I heard them both on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast and, as a guy who sells beef, I thought they might be a little crazy, but I became intrigued with the concept of carnivore. Very intrigued. I have a family history of cardiovascular disease and was not on the best path in terms of health – I was on the back side of “long haul” covid, overweight, out of shape and lining up as a serious contender for type 2 diabetes. I have a cardiologist as well as a regular physician. Both were telling me what I needed to do, but neither one had the much to offer about how I should attack the situation. The more I researched what I heard from Shawn Baker and Paul Saladino on Instagram (@shawnbaker1967 and @carnivoremd2.0) the more it seemed like I was on a collision course with carnivore.
Cutting to the chase…my cardiologist vigorously recommend that I go vegetarian. I gave it an honesty try for a month and have never felt worse in my life; anxiety, moodiness, no energy, lack of the sense of being “full” – sorry, plant eaters – and no change in body weight or pre-diabetic blood sugar levels. I said “screw it” and took a hard right turn and combined a carnivore diet with intermittent fasting that was suggested by my primary physician and I plummeted from 260 lbs to 215 lbs in a matter of 3 months and have maintained that weight for two years…I’m 6’0” so 215 isn’t terrible, but I need to cut a few more lbs. But, just eating red meat – primarily beef, venison, organs from both, eggs and fruit…my cholesterol is off the charts, right?? Nope. The same cardiologist who told me that I needed to be a vegetarian 3 years ago told me for the second year in a row that my total cholesterol is “so low that my arterial plaque is in a retrograde”….he asked how I did it and I was honest with him. He shrugged and told me to “keep doing whatever you’re doing, because it works and you’ve changed your life.”
Red meat overdose is no longer in my vocabulary – I don’t over do it, but I’m sure as heck not scared of eating red meat. If you’re interested in learning more, hit the IG handles listed above, check out Revero.com or even just spend some time Googling “carnivore diet” or “animal based diet”. There is getting to be more and more information available online. It seems to be helping to reverse chronic conditions in people all over the world from famous people like Joe Rogan, Jordan & Mikhaila Peterson to average, everyday folks like myself. It requires a leap of faith…or, in my case, simply running out of conventional options. My grandmother who passed away at 96 used to say, “good food is the best medicine” the longer I live, the more true her words ring.
In beef,
Steve
